Hands-on course on Bacterial Genomics for One Health

We are pleased to inform you about a hands-on course on Bacterial Genomics for One Health, co-organised by CSIC and VISAVET and funded by the European One Health Association. The course will take place from 14–17 December in València, Spain. It is free of charge for EOHA Full Members, but places are limited. Please find below the full course description and the link to register.
The Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (CSIC), in collaboration with the VISAVET Health Surveillance Centre (UCM) and financing from the European One Health Association, will be hosting ONE BAG: the One Health Bacterial Genomics course.
Between the 14-17th of December 2026, the i2sysbio (València, Spain) will be hosting the First Edition of the One Health Bacterial Genomics course: from sequence analysis to surveillance and biological insights (http://onebag.uv.es/); a training course in bacterial whole genome sequencing analysis specifically aligned with the One Health Framework. During the four-day course, participants will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of bacterial WGS using a learn-by-doing approach, with the help of five trainers from four institutions with a diverse background in microbial genomics, public health surveillance, antimicrobial resistance and animal health. More specifically, the course will deal with the fundamentals of 1) quality control and preprocessing of short- and long-read sequencing data, 2) reference-based SNP calling and core-genome SNP analysis, 3) de novo genome assembly using short-read, long-read and hybrid approaches, 4) assessment of genome assembly quality, 5) bacterial genome annotation and pan-genome analysis, 6) comparative genomics for outbreak investigation and genomic surveillance, 7) bacterial typing methods such as MLST and cgMLST, antimicrobial resistance detection and plasmid annotation, and 8) phylogenetic reconstruction, visualization, and interpretation of evolutionary relationships.
The course is free of charge, and participants from EOHA full member institutesare eligible for travel grants of up to 600 €. There are 12 seats available and, based on the number of applications, the number of participants per institute may be limited to ensure a balanced representation. The course will be held in English and participants will need to bring their own laptops in order to access the I2SysBio servers. In addition, students must have basic knowledge in Linux command line programming prior to the course, since training materials will be delivered through the terminal.
